When it comes to baby shopping, there’s one item that’s more than just convenient — it’s crucial: the car seat.
Unlike prams, bouncers, or cots, a car seat isn’t optional. You must have one to bring your baby home from hospital, and it needs to be the right size, properly fitted, and completely safe from day one.
But here’s the problem…The car seat world is confusing.
From infant carriers and i-Size regulations to extended rear-facing seats, the options are overwhelming — and the consequences of getting it wrong can be serious.
That’s why we do things differently at Baby Lady. We don’t just sell car seats — we fit them, test them, and make sure they’re right for your car and your child.
And in this blog, we’re going to guide you through:
- The different types of car seats and when to use them
- Why fit and compatibility matter more than price
- How Baby Lady helps you choose the right seat (and fits it for FREE)
- Why our service could literally save you hours — and possibly even lives

Why Car Seat Safety Truly Matters
Your car seat is the one piece of baby equipment that needs to perform in a split second.
It protects your child in a crash. It supports their developing spine and head. It must fit both your child’s size and your car’s set-up — not just in theory, but in practice.
Shockingly, research shows that around 50% of car seats in the UK are incorrectly fitted. Half!
That could mean loose harnesses, the wrong recline angle, or seats not being secured at all. And that’s not just inconvenient — it’s dangerous.
Here at Baby Lady, we believe safety should never be left to guesswork. That’s why we offer:
- FREE car seat fitting and installation
- A tailored consultation with trained experts
- Ongoing support to adjust or upgrade as your child grows
- Safe disposal or recycling of all packaging
Step 1: Know the Car Seat Stages
There are different car seats based on your child’s age, weight, and height:
1. Infant Car Seat (Group 0+)
- Suitable from birth to approx. 12–15 months or 13kg
- Rear-facing only
- Usually fit onto an Isofix base but can also be fitted with a seat belt.
- Ideal for newborns as they support head and neck

2. Second stage or Extended Rear-Facing Seat (Group 0+/1)
- Suitable from 6 months up to between 4 and 7 years or 105cm/ 125cm
- Some can fit onto your exiting Isofix base
- Many will have swivel options to save hurting your back when lifting toddlers
- Can be rear-facing for longer (which is safest)
- Often stays fixed in the car
3. Convertible seats
- These can last from birth to 12 years and are ideal for grandparents or people not wanting to replace the seats regularly
- They have removable pads/ and straps as the child grows
- These will stay in the car
- Some will offer swivel functions to help with back strain
- They will have multiple recline positions when in the car

4. Forward-Facing Seat (Group 1/2/3)
- For toddlers who meet the height/weight minimums for forward-facing and are over 15months
- Some will have an impact shield instead of a harness
- Many now convert to booster seats later on.
5. High-Back Booster (Group 2/3)
- For children from approx. 4–12 years old
- Uses car’s seatbelt for restraint
- Raises child to the correct height for the belt to sit safely and provides side impact
- Some have reclines for longer journeys or when the child is napping.
Did you know?
Current United Kingdom law requires children to use a car seat until they’re either 12 years old or 135cm tall (whichever comes first).
Step 2: Fit First, Buy Later
The most expensive car seat isn’t always the safest — if it doesn’t fit your car, it’s no good.
Many parents fall into the trap of choosing based on online reviews or marketing alone. But even top-rated seats can:
- Not fit your car
- Be incompatible with sloping rear benches
- Not work well with other children’s seats installed beside them
That’s why we always recommend in-store fitting before purchase.
Here’s what happens when you visit Babylady:
- We chat through your needs: your baby’s age, expected growth, family plans, and car types.
- We test seats in your car: yes — we take the time to check fit, recline, access, and comfort.
- We install your chosen seat correctly: making sure it’s fully secure and adjusted.
- We show you how to re-install: just in case you need to move it yourself later.
- We recycle the packaging: so you don’t leave with boxes and clutter in your boot.

Why You Should Choose Baby Lady
Here’s what makes us different:

2. Genuine Human Advice
No automated filters. No guessing games. Just real people with real knowledge who care about keeping your child safe.
3. Help with Upgrades and Next Stages
We’re not just a one-time purchase. As your child grows, you can return for expert help with the next seat — we’ll walk you through the transition and make sure your next choice is just as safe.
4. A Trusted Local Service
We’re based in Canterbury and proud to serve families across Kent and beyond.
What to Ask When Choosing a Car Seat
When you’re shopping for a car seat, don’t just ask “What’s the best seat?” Ask:
- Does it fit my specific car?
- Will it grow with my child, or will I need another soon?
- Is it easy to install and remove if needed?
- Can I test it before I buy?
- Is there support if something goes wrong?
At Baby Lady, we can answer every one of those questions in-store, with the seat in your actual car. You won’t find that kind of personalised service from a website alone.
